Lesley Vaage Vice-President External, Carleton Graduate Students? Association On behalf of over 3,200 graduate students at Carleton University, I am writing today to express our deep and profound concern over the recent racist and islamophobic acts experienced by the Queen?s University Muslim Students? Association. Difference-based violence?be it xenophobia, islamophobia or racism?severely limits the ability of these students to fully participate in academic life.

We strongly feel that no person should have to face discrimination and violence based on their race, gender, place of origin, religion, sexual orientation or any of the grounds against discrimination which is illustrated by sections (2) and (15) of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The defacement of posters and verbal threats are an affront to the very essence of equality and safety.

Of particular concern is the harassment of hijab-wearing women who, because of their choice to visually demonstrate their commitment to their religion and culture, are being intimidated and threatened. University campuses were once the hall-mark of equity and social justice, but these acts remind us that even institutions of ?higher learning? reproduce the systemic and symbolic violence that pervades the rest of society.

We stand firmly in support of the Queen?s Muslim Students? Association in their work to end islamaphobia on the Queen?s University Campus. Their work is invaluable to the academic community, and to society at large.

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

Lesley Vaage
Vice-President External
Carleton Graduate Students? Association
denise hammond My thoughts and solidarity go out to you. On our campuses and in our communities we can not tolerate racism or Islamophobia. Collectively we must stand up and speak out against this oppression which hurts and therby divides. Please keep me posted on how I or the Canadian Union of Public Employees can be involved to extend our support to muslims on and off campus.
Imtiaz Ahmed When one is born in the human race, she/he is destined to get the respect as any member of the human race, irrespective of gender, religion and ethnicity. The hatred crimes committed, confirm the the existence of individuals who not only devalue the dignity of humans, but also of themselves, they being a part of the humankind. Calling on all people of different intellects and wisdom, we must address this serious issue of disproportionate intolerance through education, open dialogue and persistence.
Lissa Greenspoon to all of the muslim students at queens university, please know that you do not have to endure this alone. students from across the country support you and condemn the disgusting treatment you have been subjected to recently. i am truly sorry for what you have endured and hopefully you realize how many of us are horrified by these islamaphobic acts. islamaphobia is a serious problem in this country and when it reaches university campuses, which are supposed to be bastions of tolerance and acceptance, we know that we must take action to educate people and condemn these divisive and hateful attitudes. you are not alone! may peace be with you.
Mahmood Qasim WhyIslam Canada In light of recent, hateful anti-Islamic acts including defamation of posters, threats, and harassment of hijab-wearing women at Queen\'s University, WhyIslam Canada finds it necessary to voice it\'s support for the greater Muslim community.

Incidents such as these are indicative of the ignorance and hatred that sometimes exists towards the Muslim community and their faith. They only serve to rupture the fabric of the wider Canadian community instead of bringing it together.

WhyIslam Canada is a volunteer organisation that is proactive in educating the wider Canadian community about the fundamentals of Islamic teachings, as well as rectifying the misconceptions that exist about Muslims. For more information about us, email us at canada@whyislam.org

Sana Siddiqui Simon Fraser University Muslim Students\' Association The Simon Fraser University Muslim Students\' Association supports and endorses the efforts of the Queens MSA and community in condemning Islamophobia on their campus and across Canada. We stand in solidarity with those who stand against all forms of hatred, discrimination and oppression.
Andrea McPherson Queen's University Islamophobia is becoming one of the worst, and yet most socially acceptable, forms of discrimination in the 21st century. It is appalling that people are not calling it what is (racism) and I find it equally problematic that the Queen\'s administration has not taken a more vocal role in denouncing anti-Islamic behaviour on campus. I fully support QUMSA\'s statement and would be interested in participating in an any awareness raising activities on campus. -Andrea McPherson Arts \'12
Muslim Students Association at University of New Brunswick Fredericton We totally support the MSA at Queens Univeristy and wish that Allah makes it easy for our brothers and sisters inshAllah.
Abdillahi Mohamud University of Calgary MSA, Vice President MSA-UofC and its nearly 400 members endorse the Islamophobia campaign, and will offer any assistance we can, required of it.
Dr Manal Abd El-Rahman CONSULTANT ENGINEER A civilized person condemns the harassment and threats against any human being. These shameful acts against men and women targeted because of their religious beliefs, ethnicity or national origin violate basic principles of human rights and justice. Misguided acts at the hands of a few dishonors the nation\'s long stand on peace, harmony and prosperity. All religions came from one God. If he wants, he could have made only one religion. But he tests us all in how we think and how would be able to live together in spite of our differences to make the world better place; to protect and support the weak and correct the injustice. Why harassing of hijab-wearing women? Nuns cover their heads. Do we go and harass them or we respect them because of their devotion to God. Please stop harassment and violence.
Junaid K University of Calgary I am a University of Calgary student. I am completly shocked by the events taking place at Queens. These crimes need to be brought to light and educate people of our country of what Islam really stands for. It is sad to see such an abundance of hate focused on any association affialiated with an institition of higher education.
Massih Khorvash I am shocked to hear something like this is happening in Canada.
Ahmed I am aganist racism with any human being.
Mustaali University of Calgary I condemn these acts of racism and prejudice against students on campus. All students and peoples should be treated equally and fairly in Canada, especially in an educational institution. I hope that the QU administration will take strict action to prevent acts like these in the future.
Barrington Walker Diversity Advisor to the Vice Principal (Academic) Dear Members of Queen's Muslim Community,

A number of key strategies have emerged in the wake of a highly successful meeting which was held on November 13, 2008 amongst members of the Principal's Office, the Office of the V.P. Academic, Dr. Mohamed Bayoumi, Dr. Hossam Hassanein and Dr. Mona Rahman. The university has decided to formalize a committee of concerned students, the central administration, and the Islamic Society of Kingston in order to better forge a climate of safety and respect for Muslim students who have recently been the targets of Islamophobic incidents on campus. Toward that end, Queen's will also give students an opportunity to voice their concerns about issues of campus safety in an open discussion forum. At its highest level, Queen's administration is deeply committed to supporting these issues.

Sincerely,
Barrington Walker,
Diversity Advisor to the Vice Principal (Academic)

Jessica Enright University of Alberta I am appalled that Muslim students at Queen's are facing harassment and discrimination. This sort of thing is aided by apathy. I hope that all members of the Queen's community can involve themselves in finding a solution.

I have always considered a sense of community to be one of Queen's University's greatest strengths. Students, staff, and faculty from all faiths, cultures, and ethnicities belong to this community. We need to look out for ourselves and each other.
